Layering is the most effective way to withstand the cold. The Gen III Level 5 jacket is designed for use in moderate to cold weather conditions as a soft-shell layer. It is part of the military ECWCS layering system and was made to be combined with other base and insulative layers. Worn alone or as a layer, it provides, low bulk warmth and comfort without impeding movement.

The jacket features a two-way center-front zipper opening with a protective wind flap as well as an elastic cord in the bottom hem for adjustability. It has a high collar containing a collapsible hood, Velcro closure sleeve pockets, two front zipper pockets, ventilation openings under the sleeves, and Velcro fasteners to attach rank badges and name tags.
