The US Army personal tent is a basic level of shelter for the army since around the Civil War. It has gone through some upgrades and changes since then, but the basic principle is still the same. You have the water repellent cloth protecting you from the elements, supported by 3-part poles, stabilized with a guy line, and held down with stakes. The full tent is issued by the army as two kits, each one containing a shelter half, a 3-part pole, one guy line and five stakes. Ideally every two people get together to build one full 2-person tent. Each half can be used on its own though as a sort of lean-to shelter.
The shelter half itself is made from a heavy, water repellent cotton sateen sheet, with grommets to allow easy matching to the other half. The tent half is shaped like a large rectangle, with triangle flaps on either side. When joined, these triangular flaps form the back wall and the door to the tent. There are grommets and small rope loops that go along the bottom, through which the stakes are placed to hold the tent firmly to the ground.
The tent poles are made of three separate wood sections, each with a metal ferrule on the hollow end and a metal tip on the other. Three are joined together, pin into ferrule hole, to make a complete pole. The pin at the top is slipped into a grommet at the front or back of the ridge line of the joined shelter half pieces to hold up the center of the triangular tent, supported by a guy line at each end stretched to a ground stake.
