The John Ownbey CWU-45/P is a leather version of the Nomex Air Force pilot's jacket. The original pilot's jackets were made from nylon fabric. The problem was that nylon melted in cases of aircraft fire. As technology improved, it became possible to make the jackets fire retardant. In the 1970s, the CWU (Cold Weather Uniform) line was created, both in summer, and winter weight. The CWU-45/P was the winter weight flight jacket. It was made from a fabric that was newly invented by Dupont, called Nomex. Nomex is known for its thermal, chemical and radiation resistance. Due to its interference with safety equipment, the bi-swing back was removed from the CWU45P jacket. This jacket, in Nomex is still being issued to Air Force pilots.
The John Ownbey CWU-45P Flight Jacket is made with a goatskin leather shell, and quilted polyester lining. It features 2 front cargo pockets with snap closed flap covers. The shoulder has a pencil/utility pocket for easy access to your small necessities. The ribbed waistband and cuffs keep the warmth in, and the cold out.

Customer service was awesome even thou I order it late still got it before Christmas and he loves it thank you
I ordered my jacket on a Saturday and it arrived late on the following Friday. Unfortunately, what arrived was an MA-1 rather than the CWU-45/P I had ordered. I called on Monday and got an RMA for an exchange. The return shipping label was included in the RMA. I understood that the company would cross-ship the replacement while the incorrect item was in transit. This was not the case and unfortunately, USPS decided to route the return via Hawaii. (I am not sure whether the bar code on the label encoded an incorrect address of if USPS misrouted the package.) I called again on Thursday and explained what had happened and they shipped the correct item, which arrived the next Monday.
The jacket looks very nice. The leather and lining appear to be high quality. The stitching is first rate. Sizing is right on. The jacket pattern is very close to the Nomex CWU-45/P, although not an exact copy. There is no weather flap behind the zipper and the pockets fasten with snaps rather than velcro unlike the original. It is also not as well insulated as the Nomex version. Nevertheless, I am very happy with the product and hope to see many years of service from it.
This transaction would have been rated a 5, but for the incorrect item being shipped.
I got this jacket in a timely manner (just one week), but alas it was too small. I emailed the company and they emailed back a prepaid shipping label (since I was requesting an exchange and not a refund). I dropped off the package with the jacket at the post office two days ago and am awaiting my new jacket as soon as I can get it. So, to wrap things up, my dealings with this company have been wonderful so far. The quick shipping and the great customer service stand out.
